&#x27;The doctor will see you now, but not as well as you see him&#x27; could be the introduction to an online &#x27;telehealth&#x27; appointment in the U.S., where cancer patients in rural Tennessee are being treated to virtual visits from a hologram consultant.The hologram technology, developed by Los Angeles-based Proto, features a 7 foot (2.10m) high 3D 4K screen that is so realistic some patients say it is like &#x27;the doc&#x27;s in the box.&#x27;&quot;Two words, blown away,&quot; said Dr Clay Jackson, a palliative care specialist at West Cancer Center &amp; Research Institute headquarters in Memphis.&quot;My patients can&#x27;t believe how great the technology is,&quot; he said. &quot;They just can&#x27;t believe how lifelike it is, that it&#x27;s life size, that my body language, my ability to communicate across the platform to them, honestly, I&#x27;ve heard it from patients, unprompted, multiple times: &#x27;It&#x27;s just like you&#x27;re in the room&#x27;.&quot;The Proto hologram device and AI-powered spatial computing platform, which costs $29,000 (£22,900), has been used by film and TV and professional sports leagues, but this is first time it has been approved for health consultations.Virtual visits were trialed earlier this year and have now been integrated into regular health services at West&#x27;s Paris, Tennessee location.&quot;We have a number of what we call satellite offices, or additional offices, in addition to our metro clinics. And we have about 100 mile radius in terms of our catchment area. And for many of our patients, that 100 miles represents 100 barriers to achieving care,&quot; Jackson said.&quot;So my ability to kind of beam in to the offices and be able to see them in those rural clinics without having to sort of do the &#x27;Methodist circuit riding preacher&#x27; approach is really great because it just allows us to access more patients in their space,&quot; he said. - report from Reuters
