<div><span class="fr-img-caption fr-fic fr-dib" style="width:960px;display:block" width="960"><span class="fr-img-wrap"><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1764819017586Screenshot 2025-12-04 at 11.29.14 AM.png" style="width:960px" class="fr-fic fr-dib" width="960"/><span class="fr-inner" spellcheck="false" style="text-align:left">PGH performs the first successful pediatric liver transplant in a government hospital. <em>Screenshot from PGH Facebook page</em></span></span></span></div><div><br/></div><p>MANILA — The University of the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital (UP-PGH) announced this week that it had successfully performed the first pediatric liver transplant in a government hospital to a 9-year-old boy with biliary atresia, a rare and potentially deadly liver disease.</p><p>The state-owned medical institution, considered the biggest modern government tertiary hospital in the country, announced the breakthrough in a Facebook post on Wednesday.</p><p>According to PGH, the standard management for biliary atresia follows a step-by-step approach, including early diagnosis and a timely Kasai procedure to restore bile flow.</p><p>But when the liver disease, which usually afflicts infants, progresses despite the surgery, a liver transplant is needed to save a patient&#x27;s life.</p><p>Manila Mayor Isko Moreno helped finance the liver transplant by pooling money from private companies, philanthropists, and his personal funds, the hospital said.</p><p>Moreno visited the patient last November 18 and was received by UP Manila Chancellor Dr. Michael Tee and UP-PGH Director Dr. Gerardo Legaspi.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/health-science/2025/7/28/liver-cancer-to-double-worldwide-most-of-it-preventable-study-0712">Liver cancer to double worldwide, most of it preventable: study</a></div><p>PGH said it serves more than 600,000 patients annually and remains the only national referral center for tertiary care to thousands of indigent Filipinos nationwide.</p><p>Aside from the pediatric liver transplant, PGH has made medical breakthroughs in recent months.</p><p>In September, its Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology performed the first microwave ablation for Twin Reversed Arterial Perfusion sequence — a rare twin pregnancy complication — in the Philippines.</p><p>Meanwhile, in October, the hospital&#x27;s Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery successfully performed the first scarless transoral robot-assisted thyroidectomy in the country.</p><div><br/></div><div><strong>RELATED VIDEOS</strong></div><div><br/></div><div><strong><span class="fr-video fr-deletable fr-fvc fr-dvb fr-draggable" contenteditable="false" draggable="true"><iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/C6A8oXoqVoo?&amp;wmode=opaque&amp;rel=0" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen="" class="fr-draggable"></iframe></span><span class="fr-video fr-deletable fr-fvc fr-dvb fr-draggable" contenteditable="false" draggable="true"><iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/5r0vOHNBSaU?&amp;wmode=opaque&amp;rel=0" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen="" class="fr-draggable"></iframe></span></strong><br/></div>
