MANILA — The Department of Health (DOH) will start conducting checkups for first-time schoolers when the school year begins on June 16, according to DOH Sec. Teodoro Herbosa.

Herbosa checkups will be conducted at various public schools, as part of DOH’s Road Safety event in Pasay on Saturday, June 14.

“So mayroon kaming—recently, nagkaroon ng ‘Brigada Eskwela.’ Ang chineck up ko ‘yung mga teacher. So pagdating ng opening ng school, che-check up-in natin ‘yung mga first-time schoolers for nutrition, for eyesight, for hearing,” Herbosa said.

IMMUNIZATION PROGRAM IN OCTOBER

Just like last year, the DOH is set to begin vaccinations for students in October.

This will include Tetanus-Diphtheria and HPV vaccines.

“Sa October, mag-i-immunize tayo ng mga ‘yung school age immunization kasi mayroong immunization sa first 1,000 days. May immunization sa school age— etanus-Diphtheria, ‘yung HPV sa mga babae. We will do that also,” Herbosa told reporters.

RECOMMENDATION AGAINST PROCESSED FOOD

Herbosa also spoke to Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Sonny Angara to ensure food served in schools are healthy and not processed food.

“Kinausap ko na si Secretary Sonny Angara dito. Sabi ko sana maging diet ng ating mga kabataan maprotektahan—‘yung pagbenta ng mga very salty, processed foods in schools kasi hindi siya healthy,” Herbosa said.

Citing schools in Japan that hire nutritionists to help children eat properly, Herbosa said he hopes Filipino students’ nutrition would also be prioritized.

But regarding a possible ban on junk food and soft drinks in schools, Herbosa clarified he can only make recommendations to DepEd.

“Policy nila. ‘Di ako puwede—I can just recommend. But it’s got to be DepEd to make the policy,” Herbosa told the media.
