MANILA — Dengue cases continued to decline in the last 10 weeks, according to the Department of Health.

Data from the agency showed that there has also been a 12% decline in cases from 5,900 recorded May 4 to 17 to 6,707 cases two weeks prior.

However, the DOH said it “continues to monitor the overall increase in cases for 2025.”

“With the rainy season now upon us, the numbers are expected to rise. Vector control of mosquitoes, which is the message of the 'Taob, Taktak, Tuyo, Takip' and 'Alas-kwatro kontra mosquito' campaigns, continues to be the mainstay of preventive measures,” it said in a statement.

Despite the continuous decline, schools and local governments are preparing for the possible rise in infections, especially as the start of the new academic year coincides with the rainy season.

“Before the opening of classes nagrequest na kami sa barangay ng fumigation and every month thereafter. Nagusap din kami ng general PTA. At sila ay naglalayon na maglagay ng mga screen sa windows ng ating mga silid aralan lalo na sa ground floor,” said Gerry Lumaban, Principal of the Paranaque National High School.

The school continues to implement a cleanliness campaign where students are encouraged to pick up and dispose trash in waste bins to minimize the possibility of stagnant water. Fountains and water fixtures are also being maintained.

In Barangay Roxas District, the local executive has ordered spraying mosquito killers in vacant classrooms.

Dianne Regalado, Roxas District’s Barangay Chairman, reminds parents to be watchful of any symptoms of illness at this time.

“Minsan yung symptoms ng dengue hindi nila napapansin. Dapat very observant sila pagdating sa lagnat ng bata,” she said.

The Philippines has no approved vaccines for dengue, which prompts the need to maintain cleanliness, not just in schools, but even more so in communities and homes, to prevent outbreaks.
