MANILA — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has directed the Department of Health to address the  alarming rise in the number of cases of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) in the country.

Data from the National Kidney Transplant Institute shows that the prevalence of CKD in the Philippines is 35.94 percent, much higher than the global average of 9.1 percent to 13.4 percent.

The institute estimates that one Filipino develops chronic kidney failure every hour, “equating to around 120 new cases per million population annually.”

During his visit to the NKTI on Thursday for the launch of PhilHealth’s benefit package for post-kidney transplant patients, the President noted the need to inculcate to the public the importance of healthy eating, particularly in avoiding eating too much sugar that will lead to diabetes, one of more common causes of chronic kidney disease.

“Makakabuti iyan para mapapaganda yung kalusugan ng ating mga kabataan. but this is a long term plan that we would have to institute.

Health Secretary Ted Herbosa said the President ordered the DOH to strengthen  the government’s program to prevent CKD and other related diseases.

So, tututukan din natin iyon.
