Jonathan Cellona, ABS-CBN News</div>MANILA -- Private hospitals across the country are bracing for a possible influx of leptospirosis patients as cases continue to climb in several flood-hit areas, the Private Hospital Association of the Philippines (PHAP) said on Sunday. Cases of leptospirosis, a bacterial disease often contracted through contact with floodwater contaminated by animal urine with leptospira, has been on the rise following weeks of heavy rains brought by the southwest monsoon and recent tropical cyclones. From June 8 to August 7, the Department of Health recorded 2,396 cases nationwide.<div><a class="fr-green fr-strong" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/health-science/2025/8/9/doh-opens-leptospirosis-fast-lanes-as-cases-surge-past-2-300-nationwide-1701">READ: DOH opens ‘leptospirosis fast lanes’ as cases surge past 2,300 nationwide</a></div><div><a class="fr-green fr-strong" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/health-science/2025/8/9/public-hospital-emergency-rooms-exceed-capacity-as-leptospirosis-cases-rise-1314">READ: Public hospital emergency rooms exceed capacity as leptospirosis cases rise</a></div>Dr. Jose Rene De Grano, president of PHAP, said most patients still prefer to seek treatment in public hospitals due to lower costs and government coverage. “Nakikita namin sa public hospitals, most probably, of course, gusto nila ay iyong mas mababa ang magagastos nila. Pero let&#x27;s say magkaroon ng spillage, or sumobra. Okay lang naman na pumunta sila sa mga private hospitals at nakahanda naman po kami. We have an allocation of 10% for our basic or ward accommodation,” he said. Several public hospitals in Metro Manila are already advising potential patients to coordinate with them and check other health centers as they struggle to find space for patients in light of a surge of leptospirosis cases after recent storms and the southwest monsoon.On Saturday, Philippine General Hospital spokesperson Dr. Jonas Del Rosario said they are &quot;300 percent over capacity&quot;, which he said is a little &quot;more manageable&quot; compared to the emergency rooms&#x27; condition last week.The East Avenue Medical Center is also operating more than its authorized bed capacity. According to De Grano, private hospitals are making the necessary preparations should public facilities exceed capacity. He noted that the current increase in leptospirosis admissions in private facilities is still modest. “Siguro nag-increase lang ng less than 5% right now. And these are only in areas na talagang binaha. Let&#x27;s say the National Capital Region, siguro iyong areas na Region 3 or Region 2. Pero dito sa ibang areas, halos wala. Ilan-ilan lang iyong mga cases na nakikita namin sa private,” he explained. While leptospirosis is not yet a major concern for private hospitals, De Grano warned that they are entering a peak season for hospital admissions. -- with a report from Ched Rick Gatchalian, ABS-CBN News
