MANILA — The National Bureau of Investigation said Monday it would proceed with its investigation into the alleged assassination threat issued by Vice President Sara Duterte against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. even if she skips the rescheduled date for her to appear before the agency.

The NBI invited Duterte to a Friday hearing after saying in an online press conference that she had instructed that Marcos, House Speaker Martin Romualdez, and First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos be killed if she were to die.

But NBI Director Jaime Santiago said Duterte requested the postponement of the Friday hearing because she belatedly learned that a separate House hearing on her office's use of confidential funds, scheduled for the same day, had been canceled.

The NBI set December 11 as the new date for the hearing.

When asked what would happen if Duterte again skips the NBI hearing, Santiago said the agency would continue the probe.

"Depende po sa magiging reason niya comes December 11 kung may justifiable reason why not? Pero kung dumating ang December 11, walang abogadong ipinadala then we will proceed with our report and investigation," he told ANC.

(It depends on the reason she provides by December 11 — if there is a justifiable reason why not? But if December 11 comes and no lawyer is sent, we will proceed with our report and investigation.)

Last Friday, Duterte's lawyers asked the NBI to send her "a clear copy of the complaint filed against her or any other document that initiated the investigation," as well as "questions you intend to ask of her."

The NBI director said they would ask the Vice President why she unleashed the death threats against the members of the Marcos family. They would also ask Duterte who was the assassin she had allegedly contacted for the kill plot.

Santiago added they were "investigating from other sources" to identify the alleged hitman, saying they could not compel Duterte to reveal the person she had communicated with.

"All circumstances" are being considered before they determine which cases, if any, will be filed against the Vice President, he said.

The Department of Justice said Duterte could face libel, defamation, and grave threats complaints for her remarks against the First Couple and the House Speaker.

But Duterte said her threats were "maliciously taken out of logical context." She stressed that she had to die first before the assassination plot could happen, which she said was not an "active threat."
