MANILA -- The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) is considering stricter measures, including the possible suspension of deployment to Kuwait, following the death of Jenny Alvarado, an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) who died due to suffocation from burning coal along with two Nepali domestic workers.

Alvarado’s death has intensified scrutiny of the working conditions faced by Filipino domestic workers in Kuwait, where an estimated 250,000 Filipinos are employed, with 90 to 95 percent working in households, according to the data of DMW.

“We are reviewing our deployment policies and of course will take also the corresponding action to take the necessary steps to restrict or take the more drastic measure which is suspension of deployment. But again all of those things are still subject to our evaluation and review," Cacdac said.

He added that suspension of deployment has always been one of the options being considered. Another possibility is to further restrict deployment, but these measures will still be subject to review and discussions with Kuwaiti counterparts.

The department is also addressing procedural lapses following the mishandling of Alvarado’s remains. On January 10, her family received the wrong body.
