MANILA — Vice President Sara Duterte on Saturday called on the nation to commemorate the gallantry of the 44 Special Action Force (SAF) commandos of the Philippine National Police who were killed in an encounter during an anti-terror operation in Mamasapano, Maguindanao del Sur 10 years ago.

The country observes January 25 as the Day of National Remembrance for the Heroic Sacrifice of the SAF 44, with the Philippine National Police holding a ceremony in Silang, Cavite earlier in the day.

"The National Day of Remembrance of the Heroic Sacrifice of the SAF 44 is a powerful reminder of the importance of national unity and our collective responsibility to protect our country's security," Duterte said in a video message.

The vice president emphasized that the "sacrifice, bravery, and unwavering commitment to duty" of the SAF commandos should be remembered.

"Their courage in the face of unimaginable danger is a testament to their patriotism and dedication to serving our nation," she noted.

The vice president also called on Filipinos to recognize the risks unformed personnel have to face in performing their duties.

"As we continue to honor their lives and extend our deepest condolences to their families and loved ones, let us also acknowledge the complexities and dangers faced by those who serve in law enforcement and the armed forces," Duterte said.

"May the lessons learned from this tragic loss inspire us to work together to overcome challenges and strive for a safer and more secure future for all Filipinos," she added.
