MANILA — Several devotees who attended the procession for the Feast of the Jesus Nazareno sustained minor injuries early morning of Thursday within hours of the Traslacion starting.

Among them was Glenn Francisco, 30, who has been a devotee for a decade. He sought medical attention at a first aid station along Quezon Bridge after suffering a foot injury.

Francisco recounted that he had to walk from Finance Road, where the carriage or andas was located, down to Quezon Bridge with his aching foot.

“Naipit lang po ‘to kanina sa Traslacion. Natapakan lang po nang natapakan,” he said.

Despite the pain, he still proceeded to follow the andas.

“‘Yun po kasi ‘yung panata namin (That is our pledge),” he stressed.

Other devotees who were attended to by emergency responders included those who were elbowed aside and those who suffered splinters.

Volunteers of various emergency medical services said they usually attend to bare-footed devotees who reported minor wounds, cuts, and difficulty in breathing.

“Mga kadalasang nadadala sa’min is ‘yung mga hinihimatay," said Brian Chua of the Fire Emergency Paramedic Assistance Group (FEPAG).

He said that protocol requires them to endorse these patients before having them sent to hospitals for treatment.

"Coordination...para hindi po ma-flood ‘yung hospitals po natin."

(We need coordination so the hospitals aren't flooded with people)

Chua advised devotees to have propers meal and adequate sleep before participating in the Feast of the Jesus Nazareno activities.

“Yung kadalasang mga nahihimatay, ang reason po hindi kumain ng breakfast. Well-rested, ‘wag ‘yung pagod na pagod o puyat, and kung may maintenance po silang medicine, take their maintenance medicine po,” he emphasized.

(Most of the people who faint are those who skipped breakfast. Be well-rested, don't come here very tired or sleepy. And if you have maintenance medicine, you should take that)

He also advised parents and guardians not to bring their children with thousands of devotees swarming the procession routes.
