MANILA – Around 400 Alternative Learning System (ALS) students have earned their micro-certificates from the Department of Education&#x27;s (DepEd) pioneer Micro-Certification Program in partnership with UNICEF Philippines.In a statement, DepEd said the program sought to recognize life skills among ALS learners through micro-certification. The ALS Micro-Certification for Life Skills Program is a system that &quot;validates competencies such as communication, leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving,&quot; according to the agency. It is also based on the Alternative Learning System Act and the Philippine Qualifications Framework (PQF), it added. &quot;By providing formal credentials for these essential skills, DepEd seeks to strengthen learners&#x27; pathways toward further education, employment, and lifelong learning,&quot; the agency said in a statement.&quot;This initiative underscores DepEd&#x27;s continued commitment to inclusive and equitable education by recognizing the diverse forms of learning among out-of-school youth and adults,&quot; said DepEd.  For Education Secretary Sonny Angara, the 400 learners that received their micro-certificates proved their commitment to learning. &quot;Sa ating mga micro-certification completers, kayo po ang pruweba na hindi kailangang mabilis ang pagkuha ng life goals,&quot; Angara said, based on DepEd&#x27;s statement. &quot;It can come in steps, in modules, in micro-wins that eventually build a life of purpose and pride. Because in ALS, we don&#x27;t just measure success by how high you&#x27;ve climbed, but by how far you&#x27;ve come. And today, each of you has reached a summit worth celebrating,&quot; he added. DepEd said the agency, Unicef, and the Australian Council for Educational Research did studies from 2022 and 2025 that showed the reliability of assessing life skills through micro-certification. This was implemented first in 8 Schools Division Offices in Manila, Aurora, Batangas, Iriga, Lapu-Lapu, Misamis Oriental, Davao City, and South Cotabato – producing 2,854 micro-certificates so far for ALS learners. Angara said his agency seeks to expand certification tools which in turn will integrate ALS improvement frameworks.
