CCPS via Karen de Guzman, ABS-CBN News</div>MANILA — Two civilians, including a 4-year-old child, were killed after being caught in the crossfire during an armed encounter in Barangay Cristobal, Calamba City, Laguna on October 15.According to Lt. Col. Dennis De Guzman, officer-in-charge of the Calamba City Police Station, authorities were in the process of serving a warrant of arrest against a most wanted person in Laguna when the incident happened.“During the service of the warrant of arrest, initially successful, nakuha natin siya while there was initial resistance,” De Guzman said. “Nung binabasahan na siya ng miranda rights, biglang inambush ‘yung tropa natin, ‘yung apat natin na operatiba ng tatlong male factors,” he added.The attackers were reportedly armed with multiple firearms, including a magazine-fed shotgun, a caliber .38 revolver, and a caliber .45 pistol.Two police officers were hit, while two civilians, including a young child who was a bystander, were fatally wounded.“Nakapag-retaliate din ‘yung tropa at natamaan nila ng sa lower torso ‘yung isa dun sa suspected na gunman. And after arrival of our response team, tumakbo na ang mga ito,” De Guzman said.“And during the recovery and search doon sa area, nakuha namin ‘yung deceased body ng isang suspected gunman along with the firearms.”A follow-up operation led to the arrest of another suspect on October 17.The suspects are now facing multiple charges, including two counts of murder, frustrated murder, resisting arrest, disobedience to lawful orders, and illegal possession of firearms. Police revealed that the original subject of the warrant—wanted for homicide—is allegedly part of a gun-for-hire group operating in the area.“He’s also an alleged member of a gun-for-hire group at dito sila namumugad sa likod ng malaking factory. So parang mayroon siyang fail-safe na system na ‘pag siya hulihin, ay susuportahan siya ng tatlo niyang kasamahan din,” De Guzman explained.The two injured police officers are currently in stable condition and recovering in the hospital.Ballistics tests are ongoing to determine whose firearms caused the civilian casualties.
