Contributed photo via Job Manahan, ABS-CBN News</div>MANILA (UPDATE)– President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. has named Dr. Gay Jane Perez as the officer-in-charge (OIC) of the Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA), Malacañang confirmed on Tuesday. In a text message, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said Perez officially took the helm as PhilSA’s OIC.  <div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/technology/2025/9/17/philsa-asked-at-budget-hearing-can-satellites-help-fight-corruption-1516">PhilSA asked at budget hearing: Can satellites help fight corruption?</a></div>Perez, PhilSA’s deputy director general since 2021, replaces former Director General Dr. Joel Joseph Marciano Jr., who resigned last month from the post. According to PhilSA, the Filipina scientist is also a professor at the University of the Philippines Diliman’s Institute of Environmental Science and Meteorology.“Dr. Perez has led various programs on satellite development in the Philippines as well as other projects that utilized satellite and remotely sensed data for environmental applications and climate studies,” PhilSA said. In 2018, Perez became the first nominee of the Philippines to win the fourth annual ASEAN-US Science Prize for women, for her research on using satellites for precision agriculture.This involves methods of forecasting when drought might occur, and identifying the ideal time and areas that would produce better crop yields.
