MANILA – President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. on Tuesday sought the help of local chief executives in crushing corruption at the local level, as his administration continues to probe anomalous flood control projects.In his speech at the oath-taking of the League of Cities of the Philippines’ executive board and the League of Municipalities of the Philippines’ national directorate, Marcos Jr. reminded local leaders that corruption has no place in his administration.“Malinaw ang ating adhikain. Sa Bagong Pilipinas, walang puwang ang korapsyon at ang pandaraya,” said the President.“We must take responsibility to eradicate this abhorrent culture of corruption that has poisoned the public trust and has robbed us of a better future,” he added.He also said real change would be felt by the public based on how they address the challenges they are facing on the ground, describing local governance as “where true leadership lies.”“Nasusukat ang mabuting pamamahala sa mga pagbabagong nararamdaman ng ating mga kababayan sa kanilang araw-araw na buhay,” he said.“Let us continue to do the work that changes millions of lives. Be testaments that public service can still be honest and hopeful,” he said.The President last month ordered the creation of the Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI) to probe the irregularities in the flood control projects, vowing it would be “truly independent” and not politicized.Several individuals and contractors are facing the investigative body in hearings.Last week, the ICI recommended the filing of complaints at the Ombudsman against former Ako Bicol Rep. Zaldy Co, DPWH officials, as well as officers at Sunwest Inc.
