<p>MANILA — The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Friday backed a proposed measure seeking tougher penalties against individuals behind hoax bomb threats.</p><p>Acting PNP chief LtGen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said the measure aligned with the directive to enhance peace and order and address the spread of false information. </p><p>“The Philippine National Police supports this proposed measure as this will add more teeth in running after those engaging in bomb threats, including through the online platforms,” Nartatez said.</p><p>Under Senate Bill No. 1076 filed by Sen. Jinggoy Ejercito Estrada, Presidential Decree No. 1727 will be amended to impose harsher penalties on those responsible for false bomb threats. </p><p>Estrada said the decades-old law should be updated to address the recent surge of hoax threats that cause widespread fear and disruption.</p><p>The proposed measure expands the coverage of penalties to include bomb threats transmitted through social media, messaging apps, and other digital platforms.</p><p>Nartatez said the PNP could form a technical working group (TWG) to provide insights and technical inputs to help refine the bill.</p><p>“Through this proposed law, we are sending a clear message that those who weaponize fear through false threats will be brought to justice,” Nartatez said. </p><p>“Hindi natin papayagan na ang mga maling banta ay gamitin para magdulot ng takot at kaguluhan sa ating mga komunidad.”</p><p>The police official said the PNP was strengthening coordination with telecommunications companies, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), and social media administrators to combat the spread of hoax threats online.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/09/07/16/deped-seeks-more-cops-as-bomb-threats-hit-schools">DepEd seeks more cops as bomb threats hit schools</a></div><p>This comes after a series of recent false bomb threats disrupted classes in various parts of the country, including the Davao Wisdom Academy in October, and earlier incidents at <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/regions/2025/10/8/bomb-threat-causes-3-bicol-university-campuses-to-shift-to-online-classes-suspend-work-1743">Bicol University</a> and Batangas University.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2025/10/2/bomb-threat-targets-dlsu-in-manila-isko-suspects-pranksters-0848">Bomb threat targets DLSU in Manila; Isko suspects pranksters</a></div><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/regions/2025/6/18/-classes-work-in-local-gov-t-suspended-in-santa-cruz-laguna-due-to-bomb-threat-0943">Classes, work in local gov&#x27;t suspended in Santa Cruz, Laguna due to bomb threat</a></div>
