MANILA – The Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth) will use the P29.9 billion worth of its excess funds to create additional benefits for members, its president said on Wednesday. During the Committee on Health and Demography’s hearing, Sen. Christopher “Bong” Go asked Dr. Edwin M. Mercado, PhilHealth’s new president and CEO what would happen to the P29.9 billion worth of funds that were not remitted to the National Treasury. “Ang una naming binabalangkas ay yung karagdagang benepisyo at kung magkano ang kailangan ilaan na pondo so mayroon kaming pag-aaral na paigtingin ang aming actuary, ang una ay ang mga contribution, premium contribution ng aming mga direct members,” said Mercado. “Kung kailangan ay yung mga nakalaan na pondo doon sa tinatawag na reserve fund, doon sa iba pang mga pondo na kasalukuyang nasa savings account o placement ng Philhealth,” he added.“Kami ay gagawa talaga ng karagdagang benepisyo at masusing pag-aaral kung magkano ang aabutin,” he said. It can be recalled that PhilHealth’s P89.9 billion was ordered reverted to the National Treasury since it was unutilized.The Supreme Court, meanwhile, issued a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) on the transfer of the remaining P29.9 billion. Former Bayan Muna representative Neri Colmenares has urged the agency to use the remaining funds for the benefits of its members.
