MANILA — It is “very clear” that the President’s cousin, Leyte 1st District Rep. Martin Romualdez, will continue to be House Speaker in the 20th Congress, with 291 House members backing him, according to Iloilo 1st District Rep. Janette Garin.

She said that among the 291, who signed the manifesto of support for Romualdez are Pampanga 2nd District Rep. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo; the representative of Malasakit Party List; and the son of Rep. Albee Benitez.

Napakalaking numero po niyan, considering that we are only 300 plus. Medyo overwhelming ‘yung pagpapakita ng suporta,” Garin told reporters on Thursday.

“Nagulat nga ako, noong nakita ko’yung mga nakapirma kahapon, andun ‘yung ating former president, Congresswoman Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. Napirma din doon si Congressman Claude Bautista, who's a good friend at ito nga ang naging campaign manager, one of the campaign managers of Vice President Inday Sara.

Representatives Toby Tiangco, Albee Benitez, and Duke Frasco were not among those who signed the manifesto of support.

Their names were previously floated as possible contenders to the Speakership race.

So if you don't have the guts to come out in the open and appear na ikaw nga ay interesado sa posisyon, paano ka naman magkakaroon ng guts na labanan ang lahat ng problema ng sambayang Pilipino at kailangan ikaw bilang leader ng ating more than 300 plus congressmen,” Garin said.

Some lawmakers, meanwhile, are eyeing to support the President’s son, Ilocos Norte 1st District Rep. Sandro Marcos, for the House Majority Leader post.

“Congressman Sandro Marcos is qualified. I've worked with him in the Committee on Rules. He's our senior deputy majority leader. A position that I also held before. At alam kong medyo talagang matrabaho yun, daily duty. But then it depends on him,” Garin said.

Not because he's the son of the president, but because naipakita niya yung kanyang diplomatic ways of shepherding our colleagues during the 19th Congress when he was senior deputy majority leader,” she added.

“I belong to the LAKAS party. Our party will definitely push for him, kung tanggapin niya. Sa pananaw ko kasi marami rin nagtutulak sa iba pang mga kapartido, because being a majority leader is not just being the chairman of the Committee on Rules. You should also have the art of dealing with your colleagues diplomatically and coming up with solutions instead of problems,” she added.
