Jonathan Cellona, ABS-CBN News/File </span></span></span></div><div><br id="isPasted"/></div><p>MANILA — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Thursday said the executive branch had &quot;no role&quot; in the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte.</p><p>“The executive cannot have a hand in the impeachment. Walang role ang executive sa impeachment,” Marcos said.  </p><p>“Did we discuss it with the Speaker, did we discuss it with the other congressmen? Of course. Tinatanong (ko), ‘Ano ba talaga ang plano ninyo, ano ang gusto nyong gawin?’ ‘Nandito na ito eh, hindi na namin maiwasan.’”</p><p>Marcos earlier said he discouraged lawmakers from moving to impeach Duterte, saying that it would not benefit the people. But he said that Congress had no choice but to act on the impeachment complaints filed against the Vice President, as it was their Constitutional mandate.</p><p>“Once the impeachment complaints were filed, they have no choice. The House has no choice, the Senate has no choice but to act on the complaints, and that is exactly what happened,” he said.</p><p>“Nakatali na ang kamay nila, they have to do this.”</p><p>Marcos said he would be “just a very interested observer” in the upcoming impeachment proceedings and that there would be “no representation whatsoever” coming from the executive branch.</p><p>“From this point on, I&#x27;m just a very interested observer. I will not be part of it. There will be no representation from the Executive, why should there be? We leave it to the wisdom of the Senate to exercise their wisdom,” he said.</p><p>Despite his earlier reservations against the impeachment, the President said that he advised his son Ilocos Norte First District Rep. Sandro Marcos to do his constitutional duty to act on the impeachment complaint. The younger Marcos was the first House lawmaker to sign the fourth impeachment complaint against Duterte on Wednesday.</p><p>“Sabi ko sa kanya, the process has already begun. So it’s your duty to support the process. Do your duty. You are constitutionally mandated to carry out that process. I did not know that he was the first to sign,” Marcos said.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2025/2/6/sandro-as-first-signatory-of-vp-sara-impeachment-signals-changing-times-solon-1451">Sandro as first signatory of VP Sara impeachment signals &#x27;changing times&#x27;: solon</a></div><p>He said he did not view the move of the House lawmakers as defiance to his earlier call.</p><p>“It&#x27;s not defiance, kung ganyan ang kanilang paniniwala eh,” he said. “I view that as expressing what they feel to be right.”</p><p>The Vice President’s brother, Davao City First District Rep. Paolo Duterte said the impeachment was a part of political persecution and an abuse of power by government authorities. Marcos Jr. said this was not surprising.</p><p>“What else will they say? Alangan sabihin nila na tama lahat yan? It’s nothing surprising, we’ve heard these statements from Congressman Pulong before,” the President said.</p><div><span class="fr-video fr-deletable fr-fvc fr-dvb fr-draggable" contenteditable="false" draggable="true"><iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/fN_pO-Eif_M?&amp;wmode=opaque&amp;rel=0" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen="" class="fr-draggable"></iframe></span></div><p>He expressed confidence that the impeachment proceedings would not affect the country’s growth momentum.</p><p>“Basta patuloy ang ating pinaplano, strategy sa investment, I don’t think it will have any effect,” he said.</p><p>At the House plenary session on Wednesday, 215 of 306 House members supported a fresh complaint against Duterte, paving the way for a Senate trial that could see her removed from office.</p><p>The House resolution charged Duterte with &quot;violation of the constitution, betrayal of public trust, graft and corruption, and other high crimes&quot;.</p><p>Accusations spelled out in the 44-page document include an alleged Duterte plot to assassinate Marcos, First Lady Liza Marcos and House Speaker Martin Romualdez that has been the subject of an investigation.</p><p>Duterte&#x27;s fate now lies in the hands of the Philippines&#x27; 24 senators, two-thirds of whom must vote for her impeachment to remove her from office and disqualify her from future public positions.
