Pet lovers, prospective adoptive fur parents, and animal rescue volunteers gather at the Eastwood City central plaza in Quezon City on August 17, 2024, to celebrate National Aspin Day. Partnering with the volunteers of the Animal Kingdom Foundation, rescued Aspins are offered for adoption to qualified pet lovers willing to give the Pinoy dogs the love and care they need. <p>MANILA — Hundreds of pet owners from Barangay Bagumbayan, Taguig flocked to the Rockyside Multi-Purpose Building on Wednesday to avail free veterinary services for their dogs and cats.</p><p>The one-day event led by the local government and Office of the City Veterinarian offered free deworming, anti-rabies vaccination, microchipping, vitamin shots, and veterinary consultations.</p><p>One of the main services was free spaying and neutering, which allocated 150 slots for dogs and cats on a first-come, first-served basis.</p><p>“Sa pagpuksa po ng rabies, kasama po ang population control so kung mababawasan natin yung population ng mga stray na aso at pusa dito sa Taguig, possible na bumaba rin yung cases ng rabies,” said Dr. Alex Siblag, head city veterinarian.</p><p>(Rabies control also includes population control. If we reduce the number of stray dogs and cats in Taguig, it’s possible to lower rabies cases.)</p><p>The Pet Caravan is held year-round every Wednesday and Saturday in Taguig.</p><p>The program, he said, aims to strengthen the city’s anti-rabies campaign and promote animal health in the community.</p><p>Rose Raandaan, 44, lined up as early as 6:30 a.m. to have her one-year-old cat, Patty, vaccinated.</p><p>“Daming kabataan talaga sa amin doon sa paligid. Lagi siyang nilalaro. Kinatatakutan ko po kaya buti na lang po nagbigay po ito ng libre po.”</p><p>(There are really many children in our area who always play with my cat. I was worried, so I’m thankful they offered this free service.)</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/public-service/2025/3/15/an-animal-welfare-advocate-s-paw-some-journey-from-volunteer-to-leader-1351">An animal welfare advocate’s ‘paw-some’ journey from volunteer to leader</a></div><p>Pet owner JP Ado, 30, also brought his dog to get vaccinated.</p><p>“For safety na lang din po… very important talaga kasi first, makaka-save ka, syempre mahal na yung vaccination,” he said.</p><p>(It’s really for safety. It’s very important because you save money since vaccination is expensive now.)</p><p>During the activity that started at 7am, pet owners were required to present proof of residence, such as an ID, and secure their pets in cages or on leashes. Diapers were also required for pets to maintain cleanliness at the venue.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/health-science/2025/3/18/philhealth-announces-increase-in-benefit-packages-for-animal-bites-1735">PhilHealth announces increase in benefit packages for animal bites amid expected rise in incidents</a></div><p>According to the Department of Health (DOH), the country has recorded 55 rabies cases from January 1 to March 1, 2025.</p><p>In 2024, the number reached over 400 cases, with nearly half traced to infected domestic animals.</p><p>The DOH reminded the public that aside from regular vaccination, immediate action is necessary in case of animal bites.
