MANILA -- The Philippines is finalizing a Visiting Forces Agreement with Canada which could be signed &quot;very soon,&quot; the Department of National Defense (DND) said on Wednesday. Secretary Gilbert Teodoro said the signing of the deal with Canada &quot;is tentatively scheduled very soon&quot; as they are vetting the agreements. &quot;I will wait for the proper announcements to be made officially,&quot; said Teodoro when asked about the status of the pact,&quot; he said. &quot;With France we have already received the authority to negotiate a VFA with France and we will get to work as soon as possible,&quot; he added. Earlier today, the Philippines and New Zealand signed the Status of Visiting Forces Agreement (SOVFA) allowing the forces of both countries to work more closely.<div><a class="fr-green fr-strong" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2025/4/30/ph-new-zealand-ink-defense-deal-allowing-military-to-operate-in-each-other-s-territories-1457">READ: Philippines, New Zealand ink defense deal allowing military to operate in each other&#x27;s territories</a></div>DND earlier said a SOVFA between the two countries &quot;will bolster defense and military ties,&quot; enabling the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and New Zealand Defense Force to conduct exercises in each other&#x27;s territories.As part of the Indo-Pacific region, New Zealand has joined the long list of nations expressing serious concern over increasingly aggressive actions by China in the West Philippine Sea.Manila has defense deals with the United States, Australia and Japan. It also recently concluded talks with Canada.
