MANILA — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Tuesday ordered Caloocan congressional candidate Edgar Erice to explain his alleged sexist remarks against rival Mitch Cajayon-Uy

The Comelec Task Force SAFE particularly cited two remarks of Erice, one from an April 7 interview where he supposedly said: "Provocative eh. Kung artista siya okay yan. Kung performing artist siya, dancer siya, okay yan. Kung nakalabas ang cleavage mo, naka shorts ka tapos provocative dance tapos nakalabas yung dila mo, maraming videos ang nakalabas ang dila niya."

"She is not just representing herself. She is representing two hundred thousand voters of Caloocan," Erice was quoted as saying.

In another campaign activity on April 27, Erice supposedly said: "Kaya si Flor nakasuso yan kay Mitch. Kasama yan sa hatian."

According to Comelec, Erice's statements could qualify as "discrimination against women" and "gender-based harassment" under Comelec rules.

The Comelec ordered Erice to explain within 3 days "why a complaint for election offense and/or a petition for disqualification should not be filed against you."

In a Viber message to ABS-CBN News, Erice questioned the poll body’s series of show cause orders against him.

He said there was "nothing discriminatory" in his remarks as he was only criticizing his rivals' actions as a public official.

"I have my constitutional right to criticize her action as a public official. As our representative, I find it inappropriate doing provocative dancing and sticking her tougue out,” Erice told ABS-CBN News.

“Why is Comelec concentrating on me, giving me 3 show cause orders? Am I being singled out because of my criticisms against Comelec?” he asked.

Meanwhile, Comelec also asked Barbaza, Antique municipal mayoral bet Faith “Pingping” Francisco to explain his April 12 social media post which questioned the credibility of two social media influencers who are members of the LGBTQIA+ community.

The poll body shared a screengrab of Francisco’s post where he supposedly said: “Who do these pieces of dog s*** think themselves to be? #NoToSameSexMarriage #NotoSogieS***"

Incumbent San Jose City, Nueva Ecija mayor Mario “Kokoy” Salvador was also included in the latest batch of show cause orders for possible violation of the Comelec's anti-discrimination and safe space resolutions.

Comelec chairman George Garcia said the poll body would issue more show cause orders against erring candidates.

The Comelec earlier issued show cause orders against other local candidates over their controversial remarks pertaining to women.
