MANILA — The Philippine National Police (PNP) said Tuesday was coordinating with school administrators to assess and address possible security concerns ahead of the opening of classes on June 16.

PNP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Jean Fajardo said PNP chief Nicolas Torre ordered maximum police visibility and presence around school vicinities and commercial establishments that are usually frequented by students after classes, to ensure their protection from any possible criminal activity.

Security officers were instructed to closely monitor the children and not allow them to leave the school until their authorized guardian or fetcher arrives.

Fajardo also noted that cyber-related crimes involving students have now surpassed traditional crimes such as theft and “salisi” (distraction theft).
