MANILA -- The Department of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday confirmed it is assisting several Filipino government officials to return home from Israel.According to DFA, they are assisting the return of the officials to the Philippines via Jordan.The officials were attending a short course in Israel, and are expected to come home over the weekend.A total of 17 officials are being assisted, including nine mayors, four vice mayors, two party-list representatives and two regional directors.The House of Representatives also said it is closely coordinating with DFA regarding the possible presence of two of its members in Israel amid the deepening conflict between Israel and Iran.House Secretary General Reginald Velasco said he could not confirm it yet.“We can’t confirm that at this time, because it is possible that some House Members may have included Israel in their travel itinerary en route to Europe or back to Manila, he said.“We are closely coordinating with the DFA,” Velasco added.Iran and Israel have been trading blows for the past days, with Israel saying Tuesday it targeted military sites in Iran and killed a senior commander in fresh strikes, prompting Tehran to fire missiles in retaliation on the fifth day of escalating clashes between the arch foes.After decades of enmity and a prolonged shadow war, Israel launched its surprise air campaign last week, saying it aimed to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons -- an ambition Tehran denies.<div><a class="fr-green fr-strong" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/world/2025/6/17/israel-iran-trade-blows-as-air-war-rages-into-fifth-day-1913">Israel, Iran trade blows as air war rages into fifth day</a></div>
