Antonio Audie Bucoy has been designated spokesperson of the prosecution team in the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.Bucoy graduated from the University of the Philippines College of Law in 1984 and has been a litigation lawyer for 41 years. He is the Managing Partner of Bucoy, Poblador and Associates Law Offices, and a professor of corporate and remedial law.Bucoy formally accepted the post after being approached by friends from the House prosecution panel.“Ano ang nag-udyok sakin tanggapin ito? Para ho sa bayan. Kinausap ako ng ilang kaibigan na nasa prosecution panel... Tinanggap ko po after talking to my family,” he said in a press conference on Tuesday.“Ako ay pinakiusapan kung maaaring tumulong. Hindi na po kinakailangan ng bayad. Para sa bayan ito. Hindi bayad. Bayan,” Bucoy added.The new impeachment prosecution team spokesperson has been a member of the Free Legal Assistance Group (FLAG) since 1980, and of the Movement of Attorneys for Brotherhood, Integrity, and Nationalism, Inc. (MABINI), which are associations of human rights and public interest lawyers.“Ako ay naging kasapi ng FLAG noong ako ay nasa College of Law pa… Ito po ‘yung panahon nila Jose W. Diokno, Joker Arroyo at Lorenzo Tañada. Kami po noon ay field investigators. Kung saan may pangangailangan na dapat harapin na human rights abuses… Noong ako ay abogado na, I handled human rights cases also,” Bucoy said.Having worked with former senators Diokno, Arroyo and Tañada, Bucoy was asked how they would have felt about the developments in Duterte’s impeachment trial if they were still alive.The trial has yet to start four months since the House of Representatives filed the Articles of Impeachment before the Senate. The Senate sitting as impeachment court ordered to return the articles to the lower chamber, until it certifies that all constitutional requirements were complied with in the House impeachment proceedings against Duterte, and until the House of the 20th Congress adopts a resolution affirming they will continue with the prosecution.“Mahihiya sila. Ikahihiya nila itong ginagawa ng kasalukuyang Senado…. Iba ‘yung composition noon eh. Umaani ng respeto. Walang patutsada. Ngayon, dahil sa actuation nila (senator-judges), maraming patutsada. Hindi maiiwasan ‘yan, hindi naman bulag ang tao,” Bucoy replied.House Assistant Majority Leader and Lanao del Sur 1st District Representative Zia Alonto Adiong welcomed Bucoy’s appointment as spokesperson of the impeachment prosecution panel.“It&#x27;s a step forward. It&#x27;s a good development as far as the impeachment. He said these lawyers volunteered their services.The prosecution team will still have to enter their appearance before the Senate impeachment court.“Ang private prosecutors ay mga abugadong nagboluntaryo ng kanilang serbisyo… Ako po ay sigurado na gaya ko, wala rin silang bayad dahil itong paglahok dito ay para sa bayan, hindi para sa bayad,” Bucoy said.
