Jonathan Cellona, ABS-CBN News/File</span></span></span></div><p>MANILA — Former Justice Secretary and now ML party-list Representative-elect Leila de Lima on Tuesday led the inaugural &quot;President Benigno Simeon Aquino III Memorial Lecture on Leadership and Democracy&quot; with a reminder of the late President’s pivotal role in securing the country’s maritime rights in the West Philippine Sea.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/06/24/21/noynoy-aquino-death-legacy-president">&#x27;Kayo ang boss ko&#x27;: Noynoy Aquino gone at 61</a></div><p>Aquino died on June 24, 2021 &quot;due to renal disease secondary to diabetes.&quot;</p><p>Speaking at the Ateneo de Manila University, De Lima framed her lecture under the theme “Ang Pilipinas ay Para sa Pilipinas,” underscoring Aquino’s legacy in pursuing the historic arbitral ruling against China before the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague.</p><p>“PNoy actually worked on that very significant aspect of the nation&#x27;s life, iyong David versus Goliath. Now we dared bring China to the permanent court of arbitration and we emerged victorious. And it&#x27;s all because of this man,” De Lima said.</p><div><strong>DEATH ANNIVERSARY </strong></div><p>The memorial lecture, organized jointly by the Ninoy and Cory Aquino Foundation (NCAF), Ateneo School of Government, School of Humanities, and the Dr. Rosita G. Leong School of Social Sciences, marks the fourth anniversary of PNoy’s passing.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/06/24/21/benigno-aquino-iii-noynoy-aquino-death">Former President Noynoy Aquino dies</a></div><p>It aims to institutionalize his contributions to democracy and governance.</p><p>De Lima, who served in Aquino’s Cabinet during his administration, delivered what she called “an insider’s insights” on the late President’s foreign policy strategy.</p><p>Earlier in the day, a memorial mass was held at the Manila Memorial Park in Parañaque City, where family, friends, and former colleagues of PNoy gathered to remember his life and leadership.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/2024/6/24/family-friends-remember-pnoy-on-his-3rd-death-anniversary-1350">Family, friends remember PNoy on his 3rd death anniversary</a></div><p>Francis Joseph Aquino Dee, executive director of the Ninoy and Cory Aquino Foundation, reflected on his uncle’s enduring legacy.</p><p>Dee emphasized the late President’s core principle: that good governance is key to alleviating poverty and fighting corruption.</p><p>“Ang tinindigan naman niya talaga, kung walang corrupt, walang mahirap.
