MANILA — Pope Leo XIV has appointed former Education chief Armin Luistro as a new member of the Dicastery for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life, along with other bishops and clergy.

In a release from Vatican Press Office on Wednesday, Luistro was named among the appointees to a Vatican dicastery.

“The Holy Father has appointed the following as members of the Dicastery for the Institutes of Consecrated Life and the Societies of Apostolic Life: ...the Reverend Brother Armin Altamirano Luistro, superior general of the Brothers of the Christian Schools,” the Vatican press office’s bulletin said.

A dicastery is a department under the Roman Curia that serves as the administrative arm of the Catholic Church.

The Dicastery for the Institutes of Consecrated Life and the Societies of Apostolic Life, meanwhile, is tasked to promote, encourage, and regulate the practice of the evangelical counsels, according to the website of the Vatican.

Luistro, a De La Salle Lipa (DSLC) alumnus, is the first Asian and the first Filipino to serve as the 28th superior general of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, popularly known worldwide as De La Salle Brothers.

With this position, he is leading a 3000-strong congregation committed to focus on education. His term lasts until 2029.

De La Salle (DLSU) congratulated Luistro on Wednesday in a Facebook post.

"Superior General of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools and former DLSU President Br. Armin Luistro FSC has been appointed by Pope Leo XIV as a member of the Dicastery for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life. Congratulations, Br. Armin!" it said.

La Salle Global also issued a statement, saying Luistro's appointment is a "clear sign of the synodal path" that Lasallians are called to walk in communion with the Church.

"Today, June 24, Pope Leo XIV has appointed Brother Armin Luistro as a new member of the Dicastery for the Institutes of Consecrated Life and the Societies of Apostolic Life.  This appointment is a clear sign of the synodal path that we, as Lasallians, are called to walk in communion with the Church. We extend our best wishes to Brother Armin in this new mission, trusting that his service will be a valuable contribution to the entire consecrated life of the Church," it said.

Pope Leo XIV met Luistro, along with the rest of De La Salle Brothers, in Vatican City last May 15.

The meeting marked the 75th anniversary of the proclamation of St. John Baptist de La Salle as the patron of Christian teachers, said the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP).

Luistro was born in Lipa City, Batangas on December 24, 1961. He became a religion teacher, campus minister, and class counselor from 1983 to 1986
