MANILA — Some former Filipino workers at Philippine offshore gaming operators (POGOs) have turned to online scamming after learning the trade during their previous employment, a police official said Wednesday. In a media forum in Manila, Brig. Gen. Bernard Yang, director of the Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group, said many of those recently arrested for online scams had picked up the skills while working in POGOs.“Sa ngayon, medyo hindi na natin puwedeng masabi naka-link pa ito sa POGO. Natuto na ‘yong ating mga kababayan. Nagsarili na sila. Kung titignan natin, based on our statistics, kumbaga noon siguro nagta-trabaho sila doon, pero no’ng nagsara, natuto na sila, nagsarili na sila,” Yang said. (At this point, we can’t really say the scams are still linked to Pogos. Our fellow Filipinos have already learned how to do it and are operating on their own. Based on our statistics, they probably worked there before, but after Pogos shut down, they picked it up and are now doing it independently.) He did not provide a specific breakdown of how many Filipinos had been arrested for online scams but noted that there were seven foreign nationals apprehended for the crime. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. last year ordered a ban on POGOs due to their supposed involvement in criminal activities, including human trafficking and scamming operations. The PNP-ACG arrested 608 individuals for various cybercrimes, of which 116 were convicted, from December 2024 to June 20, 2025, according to Yang.
