MANILA — Department of Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla said on Monday he will submit his application to the Judicial and Bar Council for the position of Ombudsman.

Current Ombudsman Samuel Martires is set to retire on July 27, 2025, upon the completion of his 7-year term.

“Maga-apply ako, maga-apply pa lang, I am submitting my application by Friday, before Friday,” Remulla said.

Remulla added that he will be undergoing blood test within the day for his application.

Asked about the complaint filed by Senator Imee Marcos against him and other administration officials on the arrest of former President Rodrigo Duterte, Remulla said he does not think that will hinder his application.

“The JBC can always evaluate that properly,” Remulla said.

Remulla did not provide specifics as to what he plans to do if appointed as the next Ombudsman.

“I think that I have a lot to offer,” Remulla said.

He also said that he has already relayed his plans to the President through a “mutual contact.”

He also has names in mind as his possible replacement but refused to discuss publicly as he is still applying for the Ombudsman post.

Remulla however is confident that the DOJ will be in good hands, in case he will have to leave the agency.

“I think that we’re solidly organized here and it can stand on its own if the succession is okay,” Remulla said.
