MANILA — The Commission on Elections on Wednesday said it will investigate reports questioning the surname of Drixie Mae Suarez Cardema, the incumbent representative of Duterte Youth Partylist.

Drixie is the sister of Ducille Cardema, wife of the group’s former representative and now chairman Ronald Cardema.

Blogger and columnist Tonyo Cruz earlier questioned why Drixie is using the Cardema surname when her family name is allegedly Suarez, the maiden name of her sister Ducille.

The Duterte Youth party-list representative used the Cardema surname in her certification of nomination submitted to Comelec last year.

Comelec Chairman George Erwin Garcia said the poll body’s law department is now studying the documents submitted by the partylist.

However, he maintained that Duterte Youth’s jurisdiction and accreditation issues which led to its suspended proclamation should be resolved by the commission first.

“Kahapon kausap natin 'yung director natin ng law department, pinag-aaralan nila, gina-gather nila 'yung mga iba pang dokumento na nai-submit ng naturang partylist nung mga nakakaraan pa,” Garcia said in an interview Wednesday, June 4.

“Although ang sabi natin ay secondary ‘yan, ang primary muna dapat talaga, asikasuhin muna ng komisyon 'yung issue na hinaharap ng partido mismo kung bakit sila na-suspend ng proclamation which is issue ng jurisdiction, issue ng accreditation,” he added.

Garcia further noted that this is also to consider the millions of electorates that voted for the group.

“Palagay ko ‘yun muna ang talagang napaka-importanteng priority alang-alang din sa mga bumoto sa kanila kung bakit sila nakatatlo ng boto, at the same time, alang-alang din dun sa mga petitioners na umaasang this time, magkakaroon na ng resolusyon ang mismong kaso na yan,” he stated.
