MANILA — Justice Assistant Secretary Mico Clavano on Monday asked employees of the Bureau of Immigration (BI) to provide evidence on their corruption allegations against Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado. An anonymous letter supposedly received by the Office of the President was alleged that Viado supposedly committed corrupt practices in handling illegal Philippine Offshore Gaming Operations (POGO) and the deportation of foreigners.“Kung white paper lang ang pinag-uusapan natin, sana magbigay pa sila ng mas matibay na evidence or mga supporting evidence, dahil sa tingin naman natin we have followed the letter of the President’s directive which is to make sure that all POGOs are banned and deported out of the country, so kung mayroon silang ebidensya, we would love to see it,” Clavano said.In a statement, Viado denied the allegations which he said were “patently false.&quot;Viado said that he had been warned about possible retaliation from individuals whose underground operations have been thwarted because of on-going reforms within the bureau.“We have also been warned that a senior BI official, who is now pretending to be a whistleblower and who tried to pressure the Office of the Commissioner to release a Chinese national linked to a powerful political figure from the previous administration could be behind this smear campaign,” Viado said.While the DOJ noted that the complaint is a mere piece of “white paper,” the department is monitoring the situation.“Mino-monitor ho natin ang development na &#x27;yan sa Bureau of Immigration ngunit hindi naman nagkulang ang Department of Justice at si Sec. Remulla sa pagpaalala nila sa mga Bureau of Immigration officials na linisin ang mga ranks ng Bureau of Immigration,” Clavano said.“Alam naman natin ang ugali ni Sec. Remulla, kahit kaibigan kung magkamali talagang pinu-pursue, to seek the truth, kung ano talaga ang nangyari,” Clavano added.
