MANILA — One week before the official opening of classes on June 16, teachers and parents across the country came together for the annual Brigada Eskwela, which officially kicked off on Monday.In Payatas B Elementary School in Quezon City, the launch resembled a festive celebration with a parade by the volunteers before they began cleaning classrooms, bringing with them brooms, dustpans, and other cleaning materials.Also present was environmental watchdog BAN Toxics, which inspected school supplies and classroom materials to ensure they were free of hazardous chemicals.“Dito pumapasok iyong aming adbokasiya para isulong iyong tinatawag na toxic-free and waste-free program. Karamihan sa mga produktong pambata ay nagtataglay ng iba&#x27;t ibang mga nakalalasong kemikal kabilang na itong mga school supplies,” said Thony Dizon, advocacy and campaign officer of BAN Toxics.In Batasan Hills National High School, while some classrooms were ready for the school opening, school principal Dr. Joseph Palisoc admitted the number of available rooms remains insufficient to accommodate the 15,000 enrolled high school students.To address the lack of space, the school will implement a hybrid learning setup. Students will attend face-to-face classes three days a week, while the remaining two days will be asynchronous or conducted online.Last year, the school also halted the admission of Grade 11 students due to a growing student population.“Ang Batasan [Hills National High School] kasi, identified naman talaga na pagdating sa classrooms, meron talagang challenge. Kaya nga kami ay magpapatupad ng blended modality sa junior high,” Palisoc said.According to data from the Department of Education (DepEd), the country is facing a classroom shortage of 165,433, Region 4-A (CALABARZON) has the highest deficit at approximately 31,000, followed by Metro Manila with 24,000, and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao with 13,000.President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. personally led the Brigada Eskwela in Bulacan province. He acknowledged the lack of support for teachers and the urgent need to improve school facilities.
