MANILA — A remotely operated vehicle (ROV) was able to detect a suspicious object on the lakebed of Taal Lake as the Philippine Coast Guard tested the equipment to search for missing cockfighting enthusiasts on Tuesday morning.

The PCG has provided limited information on the operation but sources tell ABS-CBN News the object was detected during the ROV's initial descent at around 7 a.m.

A technical diver attempted to retrieve the object but could no longer locate it due to poor visibility as the ROV's propeller stirred debris.

Heavy rains and strong winds also affected the search.

The ROV was deployed twice in the morning and once in the afternoon.

According to the PCG, the ROV reached a depth of 52 feet.

The vehicle has so far covered an area of about 20 meters within the vicinity of Laurel, Batangas, where the remains of the missing cockfighters were allegedly dumped.

The PCG says the ROV was still being tested aimed at calibrating its movement underwater.
