MANILA — Two sports utility vehicles (SUVs) and a bus figured in a collision along the southbound lane of the Skyway At-Grade in Muntinlupa City, Tuesday morning, July 15.

CCTV footage showed one SUV suddenly crashing into the guardrail, causing it to flip over and hit another SUV and a passenger bus.

Based on the initial investigation of the Philippine National Police-Highway Patrol Group, the driver of the first SUV, a 70-year-old Korean national, may have fallen asleep on the wheel.

“Isa yan sa tinitingnan namin na nawalan talaga siya ng kontrol, maaari ring nakatulog or what” said PLt. Nadame Malang, spokesperson of the PNP-HPG.

Malang added that the driver was not under the influence of alcohol.

The Korean national and two other individuals in the second SUV sustained injuries and were immediately brought to the hospital.

According to Aries Soliman, a Land Transportation Office accredited practical instructor, it is highly possible that the Korean national failed to brake in time.

“Sa nakita ko po, possible po siya na nakatulog kasi po especially na may edad na ang nagda-drive. Nakita ko po ‘yong reaction, late po, hindi na siya nakapreno… Normally po kasi kapag may edad na po kami po ina-advice namin ‘yong driving condition no’ng nagdadrive kasi po pag may mga edad na po, karamihan po nakakatulog,” said Soliman.

The three injured individuals have already been discharged from the hospital, according to the PNP-HPG.

The Korean national may face charges of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple physical injuries and damage to properties.

According to the HPG, the drivers of the bus and the second SUV are planning to file a complaint against the Korean national.

The Korean national also refused to issue a statement leaving the matter to his lawyers.

The HPG  urges motorists to ensure both their physical condition and that of their vehicle before traveling to avoid similar incidents.
