Comelec says no update yet on Cardema's surname issue

MANILA -- The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Wednesday said it was sorting out the case lodged before the Duterte Youth party-list before the poll body heads on the separate issue involving its nominee, Drixie Mae Suarez Cardema.

Earlier in June, the poll body said it would look into reports questioning her use of "Cardema" and even ordered the official to explain why she used it in her Certificate of Nomination and Acceptance (CONA).

Sought for updates regarding the issue, Comelec Chairman George Garcia said they have instructed their Law Department to first resolve the partylist accreditation of Duterte Youth.

"Mas marapat na tapusin muna ang issue tungkol sa pag-upo o hindi pag-upo ng naturang partylist. Technically, parang magiging moot and academic ang discussion kung sakaling hindi panalo ang partylist. Kung sakali namang panalo, walang problema," Garcia told reporters after their en banc.

"Ang pinaka-importante ay yung issue ng accreditation," he added.

Asked when the public can expect the Comelec to resolve the issues on Duterte Youth and Cardema, he said he could not control how fast the commissioners would review and decide the issues.

"Kahit ang inyong lingkod ay sobra na rin ang expectation natin at naiintindihan natin, yung expectation ng sambayanan lalong-lalo na yung ibang mga grupo na pumupunta sa Comelec for or against," he said.

"Hindi natin pwede kontrolin yung discretion ng bawat [commissioner], maaaring pwede nating pakiusapan para sa pagpapabilis nito pero yung disposition ng bawat isa, yan ay kanilang exclusive prerogative," he said.

Drixie is the sister of Ducille Cardema, wife of the group's former representative and now chairman Ronald Cardema.

Blogger and columnist Tonyo Cruz earlier questioned why Drixie is using the Cardema surname when her family name is allegedly Suarez, the maiden name of her sister Ducille.

The Duterte Youth earlier argued the former lawmaker was using a "political name", the same one that Ronald and Ducielle tried to get elected to local positions in Laguna province under.

The poll body has also yet to resolve issues lodged against the group, whose registration was cancelled early last month, stripping it of the rights and privilege of a party-list.

Duterte Youth won 3 congressional seats after garnering over 2 million votes in the May polls, but Comelec had also suspended its proclamation due to pending cases.
