MANILA — Ako Bisaya Party-list Representative Sonny Lagon on Wednesday denied allegations implicating him in the disappearance of a number of cockfighting enthusiasts.

In a statement, Lagon called the claims “false”, “utterly absurd” and “defamatory”.

“I strongly and categorically deny the baseless and malicious allegations made by Dondon Patidongan implicating me in the so-called meeting of 'Group A' involving Mr. Atong Ang and the issue on the missing sabungeros. These claims are not only false, but also utterly absurd, misleading, and defamatory,” he said.

He explained that his involvement in e-sabong operations had always been "strictly limited to the legal, regulated aspects of the sports."

He added, the was no meeting or voting that led to acts of violence against any person. He said any insinuation that he was part of such a conspiracy is a "gross representation" of who he is.

“I reject and condemn any form of violence or illegal activity. To be accused of such a heinous and unthinkable act is deeply offensive, not only to me and my family but to the entire sabong community who respect the rules of the sport and the sanctity of life,” the solon noted.

Lagon said he has been a “legitimate and law-abiding” gamefowl breeder since 1998. He added that he was invited to participate in the Lucky 8 Star Quest Inc., which was granted E-Sabong Operations License by the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR).

The lawmaker asserted that his participation in the cockfighting industry has been “lawful”, and took exception to Patidongan’s claim that he was involved in illegal activities.

He said the whistleblower's allegations are supposedly contradicting each other, arguing that Patidongan earlier claimed no Congressman or Senator is involved in the issue.

He said he hopes Patidongan will be more "circumspect, responsible, and honest".

“Let it be clear: I stand by my integrity, my record of public service, and my lawful participation in the sabong industry. I will continue to serve with transparency and dedication, undeterred by these groundless accusations damaging my name,” Lagon said.
