MANILA — Streets were flooded and littered with trash along Araneta Avenue in Barangay Sto. Domingo in Quezon City late Saturday night because of heavy rain.

A resident said the flooding is nothing new.

“Talagang ito yung buhay Araneta Ave. So, kapag ka ganitong rainy season, nagri-ready na kami, nag pi-prepare,” said Lexi

Along with the heavy downpour, garbage floating in the floodwaters made it risky for residents to wade through to get home.

The flooding had also reached chest level, making the are passable only to trucks and large vehicles.

“Pag may dumadaang mga truck ayan yung mga motor namin dito nagkatumbahan na. Yung basura, laging lutang yan, pag ganiyang umuulan.” explained Jess, a resident.

Barangay rescuers said 28 families, around 100 people, were evacuated their homes in Barangay Sta. Lucia, also in Quezon City.

Christopher Crudo, barangay executive officer, said they had to rescue some residents because the flooding was already at chest level.

“Kaya naman, naglikas na sila. Yung iba po, hindi pa dahil medyo mataas naman ang lugar nila.”

That's why some evacuated. Others did not because their homes are on higher ground.

Evacuees spent the night in modulars tent in the barangay's covered gym.

BARANGAY BAGONG SILANGAN

Meanwhile, around 108 families or an estimated 351 individuals are taking temporary shelter at the Barangay Bagong Silangan, Quezon City evacuation center.

The barangay conducted a pre-emptive evacuation for some residents due to the continuous rains that lasted for hours.

At the evacuation center, vulnerable groups including pregnant women, persons with disabilities (PWDs), and senior citizens are housed separately for their safety.

The barangay is allowing affected residents to stay at the evacuation center until the weather improves.

Although the rain has not been continuous, residents were still advised to move to higher ground and remain updated with the latest weather bulletin.
