MANILA — A 59-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday night, July 22, after allegedly shooting a 22-year-old male victim in Barangay 792, Sta. Ana, Manila, hitting him in the leg.Initial investigation of the Manila Police District (MPD) showed the victim was walking with friends when the suspect suddenly pulled out a firearm from inside his house and shot the victim.“Habang naglalakad itong biktima kasama ‘yong mga kaibigan niya, sinigawan siya ng suspek. Pagkatapos ay pumasok [ang suspek] sa loob ng bahay at binaril siya at tinamaan siya sa kaniyang hita,” said Police Major Philipp Ines, MPD spokesperson.The victim, identified as Ryan Cariño, said he was only accompanying a friend to a nearby store when the shooting occurred.“Umiinom po sila e. Mainit po ang datingan, lasing na e. Pagtalikod po namin, pabalik na po kami sa bahay…Tuloy ang kaso po,” Cariño said.The suspect claimed he had previous issues with the victim.“Dalawang beses na ako ninakawan. Yong sandals na mamahalin ng anak ko tsaka bisikleta. Tapos laging parang kinursunada ang anak ko pati ako. May binunot siya hindi ko alam kung ano kaya bumawi ako,” the suspect said in his defense.Cariño has denied the allegations.The MPD’s Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit decided to get into the suspect’s house and managed to convince him to surrender after an hour-long standoff.Authorities recovered the caliber.40 gun and ammunitions from the suspect.He is currently detained at the Sta. Ana Police Station and will face charges of attempted homicide and violation of Republic Act 10591 or the Comprehensive Law on Firearms and Ammunition.<div> </div><div>MPD-SWAT CONDUCTS SIMEX</div>Meanwhile, the MPD-SWAT conducted a simulation exercise (SIMEX) aimed at preparing officers for similar critical incidents.“Ito ‘yong sinasabi natin na paghahanda sa iba’t ibang mga senaryo. Ipinapakita natin ang ating tuloy-tuloy na pagsasanay at hindi tayo tumitigil dito kahit napapansin natin nasama ang panahon,” said PMaj. Ines.Among the skills practiced during the drill was Close Quarter Battle (CQB), which trains SWAT members to effectively enter buildings or rooms during high-risk situations.
