President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Thursday visited an evacuation center in San Mateo, Rizal, which was hit by floods from heavy rains.

Marcos, who returned to the country on Wednesday night following his three-day official visit to the US, visited the Maly Elementary School, where 546 families or 2,102 individuals had evacuated.

The President and the social welfare department oversaw the distribution of relief goods for the evacuees.

The local government of San Mateo declared a state of calamity on Wednesday due to rains brought by the habagat that was strengthened by tropical cyclone Crising, which skirted the country last week.

The President proceeded to the relief distribution at the Sta. Ana covered court.

Aside from ready-to-eat meals, non-food items were also extended to affected families such as child-friendly space kits, hygiene supplies, sleeping kits, and family water filtration kits.

Residents of Barangay Maly said that many of them have yet to return to their homes due to the persistent presence of knee-deep water.

Typhoon Emong on Thursday is expected to continue dumping rains over vast swaths of the country.

Marcos earlier assured the public that the government would continue to respond to the needs of those affected by the onslaught of the habagat. He advised people in flood-prone areas to heed the advice of the authorities.
