Parts of center island in Parañaque collapse due to flood

PARANAQUE CITY —Parts of a center island along Dr. A. Santos Avenue in Parañaque City have collapsed of due to the sheer force of rain and floods brought by the habagat.  

Authorities said the damage was seen after the water subsided on Thursday morning. 

The Traffic and Parking Management Office (TPMO) placed safety cones along affected areas to prevent accidents.

 “Ngayon nilagyan natin ng cone ito para naman safety device for the motorist, 'no? Kasi malakas masyado 'yung ulan kaya bumigay 'yang ano. Bumigay 'yang center island. Madami 'yan. Hanggang doon sa may sa may National High School merong merong may nasirang ganyan. Lalagyan din natin ng cone para naman ang motorista, hindi mailang,” said TRPM head Reynaldo Murillo. 

The local government said the repair of the damaged center island will start as soon as the rain stops. 

“Matagal na ‘yang proyektong ‘yan, engineering na ‘yan noon pa,” he adds. 

Murillo said flooding was attributed mainly to heavy rains and clogged drainage systems filled with debris and garbage.

Meanwhile the city and national government teams launched an extensive de-clogging operation after torrential rains caused flooding and damage to several road structures in the city.

City officials, joined by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO), conducted clearing operations in multiple drainage in flood-prone areas in Bgy Baclaran, Fourth Estate, and Bgy San Dionisio.

 “Basura, karamihan basura eh. Oo. Tsaka yung mga, yung mga debris. Karamihan debris eh, basura, halo-halo eh. Kaya nagbabara eh. Matagal na rin na ano, talagang catch basin yata ang Parañaque,” said Murillo. 

Murillo said that most major roads in Parañaque are now passable and largely free of floodwaters.
