MANILA - As reelected House Speaker, Leyte 1st District Rep. Martin Romualdez on Monday recognized the Supreme Court’s decision regarding the impeachment trial against Vice President Sara Duterte, but emphasized the pursuit of accountability is a mandate.Romualdez, in his speech, added that the power to initiate impeachment is the “exclusive domain” of the House of Representatives, and it is “neither granted nor guided by any outside institution.” “The Supreme Court has spoken, and we recognize its decision. We are not driven by vendetta, but by vigilance,” Romualdez said.The Supreme Court earlier declared the articles of impeachment transmitted to the Senate from the House of Representatives unconstitutional, citing the provision against impeachment proceedings against the same official more than once within a year. ACT Teachers party-list Rep. Antonio Tinio also slammed the move, saying rules were changed to stop the impeachment trial.“Binago talaga ‘yung rules on impeachment. Sinunod ng House— at kahit sa decision mismo, inaamin niyo na sumunod naman doon sa existing rules, pero may bagong rules na nilikha ang Supreme Court. So hopefully ‘pag nakita ng Korte Suprema na may mga factual errors sila, they will see the light of day,” Cendaña said.
