Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian has reacted to news that a staffer of a fellow senator was allegedly <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2025/8/14/senate-probes-reports-staff-smoked-marijuana-in-premises-1000">caught smoking marijuana</a> inside the women’s restroom inside the Senate building.Speaking to radio DZMM, Gatchalian said he was shocked to hear the news that an alleged staffer of Sen. Robin Padilla allegedly smoked marijuana inside the Upper Chamber.“Oo, nagulat ako…Ako ay nahihiya sa sarili ko dahil sa loob ng Senado merong ganyang ginagawa. Dapat nga maging magandang ehemplo kami sa kabataan,” he said in the interview.(Yes, I was surprised...I am ashamed for myself because something like that is being done inside the Senate. We should be a good example to the youth.)He pointed out the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency has mounted a vigorous campaign against illegal drug use, with several senior high school students caught using marijuana in Valenzuela. “Tapos sa loob pala ng Senado may gumagawa niyan (And then someone inside the Senate does that).”He added: “Nakakahiya para sa Senado na nangyari ‘yan.”He said he will wait for the official report from the Senate on who is the culprit and what action the Senate leadership will take against the person. An incident report submitted by Senate Security personnel Victor Patelo earlier said a staff member of Sen. Panfilo Lacson approached him and said the smell of marijuana was coming from the female restroom inside the Senate building.&quot;He claimed the odor resembled that of &#x27;marijuana&#x27; and stated that the only person in the area at the time was allegedly Ms. Nadia Montenegro,&quot; the report read.Patelo added that the male staff asked him to discreetly approach Montenegro, who denied that she was smoking inside the ladies&#x27; comfort room or using marijuana.&quot;Ms. Montenegro denied smoking inside the ladies&#x27; comfort room or using marijuana for that matter, but acknowledged possessing vape in her bag, which she said could have produced the unusual scent reported earlier by Senator Lacson&#x27;s staff,&quot; the report read.
