Maria Tan, ABS-CBN News/File </span></span></span></div><p>MANILA — Vice President Sara Duterte rejected Malacañang’s statement that her stint as education chief was a “complete failure” and claimed that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. had asked her to reconsider her<a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/2024/7/18/duterte-leaves-deped-with-heavy-heart-says-cabinet-exit-had-nothing-to-do-with-first-lady-1516"> resignation from the post in 2024.</a></p><p>“Hindi ko maintindihan saan nanggagaling yung total failure ako as a Department of Education Secretary. Kasi iba yung actions ni BBM noong ako ay nag-tender ng resignation,” Duterte said in an interview in the Hague, the Netherlands on Wednesday. </p><p>“I mean, para sa akin ba, kailangan pa ba itanong yun? Hindi mo ba nakikita kung ano yung ginagawa ninyo sa akin? O parang, hindi naman ako masokista na aatakehin ninyo ako, nang aatakehin habang nagtatrabaho ako para sa inyo,” she added. </p><p>Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Claire Castro earlier called Duterte’s stint as education chief a “complete failure” after the latter said that the current state of Philippine education was lagging behind other countries, with students still stuck in “paper and pencils”.</p><p>“Dalawang taon halos na siya ay dapat nagtrabaho kung anuman ang kaniyang nirereklamo, dapat natupad na po sana niya ito sa kaniyang panahon. Ang pagtitiwalang ito ay sa kaniyang reklamo ngayon, nagre-reflect lamang na bilang siya ay naging DepEd Secretary ay a complete failure,” Castro had said in a Palace press briefing. </p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2025/5/9/palace-hits-sara-duterte-aren-t-you-one-of-this-country-s-problems-1744">Palace hits Sara Duterte: Aren’t you one of this country’s problems?</a></div><p>But Duterte claimed that Marcos asked her if she wanted another government position, which she claimed she turned down.</p><p>She alleged that the President also asked her to help in the 2025 midterm elections through her local political party Hugpong ng Pagbabago.</p><p>“And then ang sunod niyang ginawa, in-offer-an niya ako, may gusto ka ba na posisyon? Sabi ko, wala akong gustong posisyon. Tapos ang sunod niya ang sinabi sa akin, ‘Pwede ka bang tumulong sa midterm elections para sa mga senators? Kasi diba yung Hugpong ng Pagbabago, kasali naman yun sa Uniteam noon,’” Duterte said. </p><p>“Sabi ko, pag-iisipan ko pero wala pa akong plano para sa 2025 midterm elections ng senators,” she said.    </p><p>Duterte in June 2024 <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/2024/6/19/sara-duterte-resigns-from-marcos-cabinet-palace-1450">resigned from the Marcos Cabinet</a>, following tense relations between their families. </p><div><a href="https://news.abs-cbn.com/news/2024/7/18/vp-duterte-angara-meet-for-deped-turnover-1004">Angara takes DepEd helm from VP Duterte</a></div><p>Castro on Thursday doubled down on her assessment of Duterte’s DepEd stint. In a statement, the Palace official noted the Vice President’s August 2023 “admission” that she had to rely on education experts to formulate the Matatag curriculum due to her lack of education background.</p><p>“Records will speak for themselves. She admitted in one of her  speaking engagements that she has no expertise in formulating the Matatag curriculum since she is not from the education sector.  Hindi daw niya ma-review ang Matatag curriculum dahil wala siyang alam rito,” Castro said.</p><p>“Ang alam niya lang daw gawin ay magpukpok ng tao para magtrabaho kaya maaaring siya daw ang cause ng pagtaas ng presyon ng isa niyang tao.”</p><p>The administration spokesperson reminded Duterte of the various alleged irregularities in the Department of Education flagged under her leadership, including 1.5 million undistributed gadgets, laptops and school materials and allegations of “ghost students.”</p><p>“Ano nangyari sa more than P100M para sa ghost students dahil sa fake vouchers sa panahon niya? Buti na rin lang at nadiskubre kaagad ni Sec.
