MANILA — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. met with US senators Roger Wicker and Deb Fisher during a courtesy call in Malacañang Palace Thursday, August 28.The two US lawmakers were also accompanied by the US Senate Armed Services Committee Congressional Delegation.In his message, Marcos Jr. underscored the longstanding relationship between the Philippines and the United States.He also extended gratitude for the US support on the modernization of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.“We are greatly appreciative of all the support that the United States has given us in the face of all the challenges that we in the Philippines are facing and the continuing support that you have given us with regard to the modernization of our armed forces, as part of our response to those challenges that we are facing,” he said.“And we hope to continue working with you to an even greater extent,” he added.Marcos Jr. also expressed openness to any proposals from the US lawmakers “to improve the situation here” in the Philippines.“And that&#x27;s something that we, of course, would like to do together, but not only bilateral between the US and the Philippines, but also with our multilateral arrangements that we have made around the region, and even in far-away areas,” the president stated.Wicker, for his part, thanked Marcos Jr. for the warm welcome.He noted that the delegation began as a bipartisan and bicameral delegation and they initially had five House of Representatives members coming with them but had to drop off “because of their House rules”.“So, it&#x27;s only Senator Fisher and I at this point. So, you honor us by entertaining a small, but very supportive delegation of senators,” he said.“And yes, we do have a lot of issues, but it&#x27;s a mutual thing. We appreciate the support that the Philippines have given to the United States. Our relationship is one of the most important, and I would say one of the most growing in terms of closeness that we have. So this means so very much to us, and it&#x27;s just a short two-night visit but we&#x27;ve put a lot into it,” Wicker added.The lawmaker also commended some of the Philippine officials.
