Ex-PNP chief Nicolas Torre III is not an Icarus but a phoenix, a senior analyst said Friday, saying the ex-national police chief is no stranger to setbacks and remains the only popular official in the Marcos administration.Senior analyst Richard Heydarian said Torre’s removal as PNP chief has not dimmed his popularity after his twin arrests of ex-president Rodrigo Duterte and televangelist Apollo Quiboloy.He noted many Filipinos see in Torre the decisive leadership and competence that is absent from other leaders even as he continues to weather criticism from his detractors.“Si Torre lang naman ang sikat sa buong administrasyon…Napaka organic ng kanyang charisma. Mukhang patok na patok siya,” Heydarian said in a DZMM interview.Heydarian said Torre’s removal could be due to a power struggle inside Malacanang while others surmise that top officials ganged up on the PNP chief because of his popularity.Sidelining Torre, however, was not a good move for the Marcos administration, Heydarian said. “The last thing you want to do is get rid of your most popular guy,” he said, referring to the Duterte family’s push to reclaim Malacanang in 2028 as well as the ongoing controversy over flood control projects.The analyst said Torre could move up to a secretary-level position in the Marcos Cabinet while eyeing a possible bid in the 2028 elections but noted the ex-PNP chief may still be angry after his removal.Refusing any position in the Cabinet such as flood control czar, however, would be a “lose-lose” on both sides, he said.
