<p>MANILA - Malacanang on Friday said that the government is &quot;actively monitoring and addressing&quot; security threats following reports that alleged Chinese sleeper agents have infiltrated the country. </p><p>Palace Press Officer Claire Castro, quoting the National Security Council, said authorities are working to dismantle espionage networks in the country.</p><p>Senator Panfilo Lacson earlier revealed the presence of Chinese “sleeper agents” and Chinese People’s Liberation Army spies operating in the country, including areas near critical government offices such as the Commission on Elections and Malacañang Palace </p><p>“Ayon po sa kanila, &#x27;We cannot go into specifics for security reasons but we can assure the public that our security forces are actively monitoring and addressing these threats. The government does not take espionage lightly, and we act swiftly when credible intelligence is verified. Recent operations have already led to arrest of suspected foreign operatives which shows that our agencies are not standing still. We are working closely with law enforcement and intelligence units to dismantle espionage network whenever they may be,&#x27;” Castro said, reading a statement of the NSC.</p><p>The Philippine Coast Guard said that it is currently tightening its vetting process for recruiting auxiliary members after delisting 36 individuals who were later found to have &quot;shaky&quot; citizenship or identified as Chinese nationals. </p><p>These include businessman Joseph Sy, also known as Chen Zhong Zen, who was discovered to have allegedly secured fraudulent Philippine identity documents and gained entry into the PCGA.</p><p>Malacanang, meanwhile, allayed concerns over the presence of Chinese nationals in the PCG Auxiliary, saying that safeguards within the Philippine Coast Guard prevent these individuals from having access to critical information or operations of the organization.</p><p> “Nakausap din po natin ang kinatawan po ng PCG at ito pong sinasabi nilang Chinese diumano ay patuloy pa rin po ang pag-iimbestiga ng PCG. At sa ngayon po, ang sinasabi nilang tao o iyong person involved ay tinanggal na po sa PCGA,” she said.</p><p> “At huwag pong mag-alala ang taumbayan dahil ang PCGA ay isang civil organization at kung sinuman po ang mapapasok dito kahit foreigner po, ito naman po ay paggawa lang naman ng… pagtulong, pagbibigay ng relief, pagtulong sa PCG pero wala po silang access sa anumang mga operasyon at hindi po sila sumasampa sa barko.
