Jay Tarriela/Facebook</span></span></span></div><div><br/></div><div><br/></div><p>MANILA – Around 21 to 28 Chinese research vessels have so far passed through or encroached into the Philippine exclusive economic zone this year, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said on Monday. </p><p>Most of the research vessels “are tied up with Chinese universities,” Philippine Coast Guard spokesperson Commodore Jay Tarriela said. </p><p>“Nagko-conduct talaga [sila] ng pagsasaliksik sa karagatan and there are very limited instances na masasabi natin na ang isang research vessel ay affiliated sa PLA (People&#x27;s Liberation Army) Navy warship,” he said in a public briefing aired on state-run PTV.   </p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2025/8/3/pcg-challenges-chinese-research-ship-in-west-philippine-sea-1343">PCG challenges Chinese research ship in West Philippine Sea</a></div><p>The PCG last week<a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2025/7/31/coast-guard-monitoring-2-chinese-research-vessels-in-philippine-eez-1506"> monitored two Chinese research vessels </a>about 200 nautical miles off the coast of Rizal, Palawan. </p><p>On Saturday, the PCG encountered and<a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2025/8/3/pcg-challenges-chinese-research-ship-in-west-philippine-sea-1343"> challenged the Chinese research vessel Xiang Yang Hong 05 </a>some 14.92 nautical miles from Babuyan Island, but the Chinese ship did not respond.</p><p>“Ang ating standard operating procedure is always, unang-una sa lahat, we monitor it using satellites… Once it is detected through the satellite, we will [send] an aircraft to physically eyeball, makita talaga yung Chinese research vessel,” Tarriela said.  </p><p>“Kung mag-deploy man tayo ng barko na manggagaling sa Pangasinan at maabutan pa siya, that’s when we deploy a Coast Guard vessel,” he added.  </p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2025/8/4/philippine-indian-navies-begin-first-joint-south-china-sea-patrols-1013">Philippines, India begin first joint West Philippine Sea patrols</a></div><div><br/></div><div><iframe width="1100" height="619" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/iDYrW1jq47I" title="2 Chinese research vessels spotted in PH EEZ | ANC" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe><iframe width="1100" height="619" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/QUNHDXLu8Xo" title="Full briefing: Facts about Chinese research vessel inside PH&#x27;s archipelagic waters | ABS-CBN News" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe></div>
