Jonathan Cellona, ABS-CBN News/File </span></span></span></div><p>MANILA — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Friday said the Supreme Court’s decision on Vice President Sara Duterte’s impeachment case “has no bearing on the rightness or wrongness” of the accusations against her as the magistrates only ruled on a “procedural question.”</p><p>Earlier this week, the<a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2025/8/6/senators-voting-on-marcoleta-motion-to-archive-sara-duterte-impeachment-1906"> Senate voted to archive Duterte’s impeachment case </a>after the Supreme Court blocked her trial, citing the House of Representatives’ violation of a constitutional bar on multiple impeachment charges against an official within a year. </p><p>“We have to make very, very clear to everyone that the Supreme Court decision does not have any bearing on the rightness or wrongness in the impeachment case. Accountability doesn&#x27;t come into it here,” the President said in a press conference in India.</p><p>“The merits of the case were not examined by the Supreme Court. This does not decide the merits of the case. It just talked about the procedure,” he said. </p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2025/8/7/vp-sara-thanked-god-after-senate-vote-to-archive-impeachment-imee-1600">VP Sara &#x27;thanked God&#x27; after Senate vote to archive impeachment: Imee</a></div><p>Despite these remarks, Marcos said that he never directed any Congress allies on what they should do with Duterte’s impeachment case even if the topic had been raised in some of their conversations.</p><p>“Siyempre may nagtatanong… Sorry, problema ninyo yan. Hindi ako nanghihiram ng problema. That’s your problem,” the Chief Executive said.</p><p>“It will be highly improper for me to tell my friends in the Senate and House na ito ang dapat ninyo gawin… Highly improper yun. Pati ako mai-impeach kung gagawin ko yun,” he said.</p><p>“I keep telling you that the president has no role in this… I’m an impeachable officer so I can’t really involve myself in this.”</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2025/8/7/-archiving-vs-dismissal-why-lacson-challenged-marcoleta-s-motion-to-dismiss-impeachment-complaint-1419">&#x27;Archiving vs dismissal&#x27;: Why Lacson challenged Marcoleta&#x27;s motion to dismiss impeachment complaint</a></div><p>The House of Representatives impeached Duterte in early February on allegations of graft, corruption and an alleged assassination plot against Marcos, her running-mate in the 2022 elections. </p><p>But the Supreme Court said in late July that a trio of earlier complaints logged against Duterte in the House — but voted on only at the committee level — had constituted impeachment proceedings. It said a fresh impeachment complaint could be introduced, but not before February 6, 2026.</p><p>Following the latest developments in the impeachment saga, Marcos said the country should still “try to get some answers.”</p><p>“The process will continue, pabayaan natin,” the President said.</p><p>“Ang COA (Commission on Audit) nandiyan. They can examine all of this… Because we are coming up in the budget process palagay ko maglalabasan na naman yan,” he said.</p><p>“I’m sure the House and the Senate will start to conduct further investigations on this because it really is their purview,” he said.</p><div><iframe width="1100" height="619" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/YiqOtDYEFbU" title="What Marcos said on VP Sara impeachment developments | ANC" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe></div><p>Meanwhile, Duterte’s defense team said they were <a href="https://news.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2025/8/7/sara-duterte-s-defense-team-keeps-guard-up-despite-archived-impeachment-case-2101">still preparing for a possible impeachment trial </a>should the Supreme Court reverse its initial decision. </p><p>“As lawyers, we always anticipate situations and we always have to expect even the unexpected so I don’t think we have a level of comfort at this point… We are just preparing for any eventuality para naman walang gulatan diba?” said Michael Poa, one of Duterte’s lawyers. </p><p>“Right now, if people ask me kung posible bang magkaroon ng second complaint, do you think there will be a second impeachment complaint after the one year bar, I would say it’s a possibility, and we are ready for that possibility,” he told ABS-CBN News.</p><p>For the President, the work continues whatever happens to Duterte’s impeachment case.</p><p>“There are so many things that I need to do and those are my priorities,” Marcos told reporters before ending his 5-day state visit to India.</p><p>“We will just continue our work,” he said.</p><div><iframe width="1100" height="619" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/nnEcbKGFlKc" title="Senate archives Sara Duterte impeachment case, voting 19-4-1 | ABS-CBN News" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe> <iframe width="1250" height="703" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/1Nb7A1R8x6I" title="What Sara texted Imee after Senate archived her impeachment case | ABS-CBN News" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe></div>
