Mark Demayo, ABS-CBN News/file </span></span></span></div><div style="text-align:left"><br/></div><p>MANILA <strong>(UPDATE) </strong>— The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Monday disputed China&#x27;s claim in its travel alert that there was an &quot;increasing crimes targeting Chinese nationals&quot; in the Philippines, saying it &quot;mischaracterizes the situation.&quot;</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2025/8/27/pcg-tightens-vetting-of-auxiliary-members-after-discovering-chinese-nationals-in-roster-1524">PCG says &#x27;stepping up&#x27; vetting of auxiliary members after discovering Chinese nationals within ranks</a></div><p>On Sunday, the Chinese Embassy in the Philippines cautioned its citizens about traveling in the Philippines, citing &quot;worsening public security&quot; and alleged crimes against Chinese nationals.</p><p>But the Philippine government said &quot;the relevant travel advisories issued by China mischaracterizes the situation in the Philippines.&quot;</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2025/4/1/china-warns-chinese-citizens-over-unstable-public-security-in-ph-0036">China warns Chinese citizens over ‘unstable public security’ in PH</a></div><p>It explained that instances of crimes that victimized Chinese nationals were perpetrated by their compatriots.</p><p>The DFA assured China that the said crimes &quot;are being vigorously addressed by relevant law enforcement authorities.&quot;</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2025/7/21/chinese-fugitive-linked-to-makati-restaurant-shooting-arrested-in-tawi-tawi-1038">PNP nabs Chinese fugitive linked to Makati shooting, Taguig abduction</a></div><p>&quot;The Philippines remains committed to constructively addressing matters of mutual concern with China.  The Department of Foreign Affairs recalls the recently concluded 9th Philippines-China Joint Consular Consultation Meeting, where both sides discussed concerns and measures, and expressed readiness to deepen law enforcement cooperation,&quot; the DFA added.</p><p>Earlier this year, China also issued a similar travel alert over what it called as “unstable public security” in the Philippines.</p><div><br/></div><div><strong>CRIME RATE DROP</strong></div><div><br/></div><p>The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Monday also reported the crimes in the country have been declining, refuting China’s remark in its travel warning.</p><p>In a media briefing at Camp Crame, PNP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Randulf Tuaño said focus crimes and index crime volume in the Philippines were both down by at least 16 percent — representing 22,000 incidents from January 1 to August 28, 2025 compared to 27,000 in the same period in 2024.</p><p>Focus crimes are a subset of serious crimes against persons and property, including murder, homicide, physical injuries, rape, robbery, theft, and vehicle/motorcycle theft, used to track public safety. </p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2024/12/24/dnd-chief-accuses-china-of-sponsoring-criminal-syndicates-1624">Defense chief accuses China of &#x27;sponsoring criminal syndicates&#x27;</a></div><p>Index crimes, on the other hand, refer to a broader category of serious and frequent crimes that provide an &quot;index&quot; or indicator of the overall crime situation, encompassing a range of crimes against persons and property, not limited to the specific eight focus crimes listed.</p><p>“Hindi po lumalala ang ating crime situation dito sa Pilipinas,” Tuaño stressed.</p><p>(The crime situation in the Philippines is not worsening.)</p><p>Tuaño said acting PNP chief Lt. Gen.
