Sherwin Gatchalian for the 2026 national budget as the Senate began its budget deliberations on Monday with the Development Budget Coordination Committee (DBCC).</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/business/2025/8/23/education-allocation-in-proposed-budget-falls-short-of-unesco-standard-business-group-1214">Education allocation in proposed budget &#x27;falls short of UNESCO standard&#x27; — business group</a></div><p>Gatchalian, in his opening statement, cited allegations that the 2025 budget was one of the most corrupt budgets in Philippine history. He also mentioned reports of ghost and substandard projects included in the said budget.</p><p>To avoid a repeat of these, Gatchalian said “The direction of this committee for the 2026 budget is a budget that is lean, effective and efficient.&quot;</p><p>&quot;We will be very conscious on what happened in the last 2025 budget. So we would ask our colleagues to help this committee to scrutinize the 2026 budget and to make sure that every single centavo that is included in the 2026 budget will redound to the benefit of our constituents,&quot; he said.</p><p>Central Bank Governor Eli Remolona, Jr., said the country’s economy is in a good shape with inflation tamed and the banking system strong. He said the country’s external position is also sound.  </p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/business/2025/6/27/2026-national-budget-set-at-p6-793-trillion-1021">2026 national budget set at P6.793 trillion</a></div><p>According to Remolona, inflation is within the target range of 2 percent to 4 percent from 2025 to 2027.</p><p>“Our economy is in a sweet spot,” he stated.</p><p>The P6.793 trillion proposed 2026 national budget is 7.4 percent higher than the 2025 budget.</p><p>The biggest allocation will go to the Department of Education (DepEd) amounting to P928.5 billion or 13.7 percent of the entire budget; next is the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) with a proposed P881.3 billion or 13 percent; third is the Department of Health (DOH) with P320.5 billion or 4.7 percent.</p><p>“What we present is a NEP (National Expenditure Program) that is not only strategic and fiscally sound, but most importantly people centered,” Department of Budget and Management (DBM) Secretary Amenah Pangandaman said.  </p><p>Gatchalian, meanwhile, announced that the Senate budget <a href="https://budget-transparency-portal.senate.gov.ph/">transparency portal</a> is now online.</p><p>The public can access the portal for documents related to the budget.</p><div><br/></div><div><strong>RELATED VIDEO</strong></div><div><br/></div><div><span class="fr-video fr-deletable fr-fvc fr-dvb fr-draggable" contenteditable="false" draggable="true"><iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/I8GdZSUJy6I?&amp;wmode=opaque&amp;rel=0" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen="" class="fr-draggable"></iframe></span><br/></div>
