MANILA — Vice President Sara Duterte on Friday urged educators to lead the youth to the truth and correct ways, as the country celebrates the National Teachers’ Month.In her message released earlier in the day, Duterte, a former education secretary, described teachers as those who shape the nation’s future and “fortify the values that hold the nation together.”The Vice President also said through educators, learners know the importance of freedom and the protection of rights, noting that they build the nation despite being in small classrooms and having limited resources that “eroded the education system.”“Sana ay mas ihanda natin ang mga kabataan sa landas ng tama at katotohanan. Tandaan din natin na sa bawat hamon, may papel tayo na itanim at palaguin ang pag-asa, pananampalataya, at pagmamahal sa ating mga mag-aaral,” Duterte said in her message.Aside from this, Duterte said teachers hone the youth through critical thinking, which is important in fighting disinformation.“Nanggagaling sa mga guro ang pundasyon ng kaalaman ng mga kabataan at bahagi kayo sa paghubog ng kritikal na pag-iisip,” she said.“Mahalaga ito sa panahon ng fake news, misinformation, disinformation at iba pang media at social media content na naglalayong manipulahin ang katatohanan at tama,” she added.“Magkaisa tayo sa pagtiyak na lumaking may talino, may dunong, may malasakit at pagmamahal ang mga kabataang Pilipino,” she said.The Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) this week marked the beginning of National Teachers’ Month by pressing lawmakers to approve a substantial salary increase and a doubled education budget as Congress begins deliberations on the Department of Education’s (DepEd) 2026 allocation.The group also raised alarm over what it described as chronic neglect in the Marcos Jr. administration’s proposed 2026 education budget, pointing out unresolved shortages of  classrooms, teachers, education support personnel, and millions of textbooks and learning materials.ACT vowed to sustain mass actions throughout National Teachers’ Month, culminating in nationwide protests on World Teachers’ Day on October 5.
